THE CARE BEHIND THE REPORT
Is starting a parked car for a few minutes enough?
Why a brief engine start is not a complete storage plan, and why petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars need different care.

A running engine is only one part of the picture
It can be comforting to hear that someone started your car. But that alone does not tell you about its tyres, brakes, warning lights, charge level or condition. A useful visit records checks and follows the instructions for the particular vehicle.
A short trip is not a battery guarantee
The AA lists too many short journeys among the causes of a flat battery. There is no single drive duration that guarantees a full recharge for every car. An older or discharged battery may need testing or an appropriate charger. Our approximately 20-minute drive is part of a care visit, not a promise to restore any battery.

Diesel: driving conditions matter
Ford explains that low-speed, short or insufficiently warmed-up operation may prevent a diesel particulate filter from cleaning itself adequately. Regeneration requirements depend on the model and its condition. A generic 20-minute town drive must not be presented as a guaranteed filter-cleaning procedure. Follow the vehicle’s manual and respond to warnings.
Hybrids and EVs need their own plan
Toyota explains that its hybrids generally have a separate 12-volt battery as well as the high-voltage hybrid battery. Tesla’s Model 3 guidance recommends plugging in during extended parking to reduce normal range loss. Neither example should be copied blindly to another model: agree charging access and use the correct owner’s manual.

Make the visit useful and safe
Tell the team about known faults, battery concerns and model-specific instructions before leaving. The driver’s checks and evidence should help you decide what needs attention. Never run a combustion engine in an enclosed space, and do not drive a vehicle with a suspected safety-critical fault simply to complete a visit.
General guidance. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual and advice from a qualified workshop take priority. Manufacturer examples are not endorsements of Expat Auto Care.
